How to Increase Men Fertility : Things you should know

Fertility means a person's ability to reproduce by natural means. Male Infertility means when a man has poor chances of making his female partner pregnant. Male Infertility depends on a variety of factors but usually depends on the quality of his sperm.
Aspects of sexual function and semen quality may affect fertility are:


  • Libido: Man’s desire to have sex. Foods and supplements who claim to increase libido are called an aphrodisiac.
  • Erectile dysfunction: Also known as impotence, erectile dysfunction is when a man is unable to develop or maintain an erection.
  • Sperm count: The number of sperm cells in a given amount of semen is an important aspect of semen quality.
  • Sperm motility: The ability of the sperm cells to swim is called the sperm motility. 
  • Testosterone levels: Infertility in Male may be due to low level of testosterone, the male sex hormone


Male infertility can be due to several causes like genetic, general diet, fitness, diseases and dietary contaminants.

Natural remedies 

Ancient herbal and traditional medicines have been used to treat and increase sperm count and improve sperm health for thousands of years. Researchers have suggested some efficient natural remedies to increase sperm count. 

Some natural ways to increase sperm count.

  • D-Aspartic Acid Supplements for boosting sperm count- D-AA is a type of amino acid that acts as a dietary supplement, is mainly present in certain glands, such as the testicles, as well as in semen and sperm cells.


Researchers believe that D-AA levels are significantly lower in infertile men. Supported studies show that D-AA supplements may increase levels of testosterone that plays an essential role in male fertility.

However, the evidence is not entirely consistent.


  • Regular Exercise and Enough Sleep - Exercising improves your confidence and physical but also increases testosterone levels and improving male fertility. As per studies men who exercise regularly have higher testosterone levels and better semen quality than men who are inactive.


  • Quit smoking- A 2016 meta-analysis that reviewed the results of over 20 studies with a total of nearly 6,000 participants found that smoking consistently reduced sperm count and health.
    The researchers found that people who smoked moderate or heavy amounts of tobacco had a lower sperm quality than people who smoked tobacco less heavily.


  • Intake of fenugreek supplement- Fenugreek has been for a long time to use as a natural remedy for poor sperm health, and advocates suggest that it may help improve sperm count. Therefore fenugreek is considered to be an effective male fertility supplement.


‘A study in 60 healthy men showed that taking 600 mg of Testofen, a supplement made from fenugreek seed extract, for six weeks improved libido, sexual performance, and strength’- PubMed

‘Another study of 120 healthy men showed   taking 600 mg of Testofen every day for three months improved erectile function and the frequency of sexual activity.’

  • Get enough vitamin D- Vitamin D is another nutrient that may boost testosterone levels. Researchers are not sure why, but blood levels of vitamin D and calcium appear to impact sperm health. Deficiency in calcium may also adversely impact sperm count and thereby improving male fertility.


  • Take ashwagandha- Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a medicinal herb that has been used in India since ancient times. It was a part of traditional medicines used as a remedy for several forms of sexual dysfunction.



‘A Study in 2013 in men with low sperm cell counts showed that taking 675 mg of ashwagandha root extract per day for three months significantly improved fertility.

To an increased sperm count by 167%, semen volume by 53% and sperm motility by 57%, compared to the start of the study. In comparison, minimal improvements were noticed among those who got a placebo treatment.’



  • Eat more antioxidant-rich foods- Antioxidants are molecules that help deactivate compounds called free radicals, which damage cells. Adequate intake of antioxidants, such as vitamin C may improve semen quality.


‘A study in infertile men showed that taking 1,000-mg vitamin C supplements twice a day for up to two months increased sperm motility by 92% and sperm count by more than 100%.’ 



  • Get enough folate and zinc- Zinc is an essential mineral found in high amounts in animal foods, such as meat, fish, eggs, and shellfish.
    Observational studies show that low zinc status or deficiency is associated with low testosterone levels, poor sperm quality and an increased risk of male infertility.
    Therefore, taking zinc supplements may increase testosterone levels and improve male fertility.




  • Avoid excessive alcohol and drug use- Avoiding heavy alcohol consumption may increase testosterone levels and improve semen quality and thus benefit male fertility.




  • Minimize Stress- Stress reduces sexual satisfaction and impairs male fertility. Stress management can be as simple as taking a walking, meditating, exercising or spending time with friends.
  • Increase healthful fat intake- Polyunsaturated fats are necessary for the healthy development of the sperm membrane. Such fats include omega-3 and omega-6. 



‘A 2019 review of three studies found that males with infertility who supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids experienced a significant improvement in sperm motility and concentration, therefore improving male fertility.’



  • Reduce unhealthful fat intake- A on 209 healthy Spanish males aged 18–23 years found that as they increased their consumption of trans fatty acids, their sperm count decreased proportionately. Thus affecting male fertility.
  • Limit the consumption of soy and estrogen-rich foods-Some foods, like soy products, contain plant estrogen. This can reduce testosterone bonding and sperm production. This may impact male fertility.
